Heritage

As a former County Durham mining village with deep industrial roots, our heritage is defined by the Elemore Colliery and a strong enduring community spirit focused on preserving its coal mining history.

Easington Lane was at one time surrounded by collieries throughout the Durham Coalfield. November 1822 saw the opening of the Hetton Colliery Railway which took coals from Hetton to the staithes at Sunderland. Designed by George Stephenson, this was the world’s first railway designed to be used by steam only.

As well as the many rooms used for training and social activities, ELCAP has its own heritage room, offering an insight into the local area.
